The Weight of Noticing

By Ryan McMillian

The Management Blindness

Most leadership advice focuses on the "Performance"—the output, the metrics, and the directive. But Rule III of the OATHBORN framework states that leadership happens in the space between words.

In a loud world, we are often "near" our people without being "with" them. We manage tasks, but we fail to notice the humans carrying them. You cannot lead people you do not notice.

Attention is Authority

People do not follow titles; they follow Presence. Your authority is not found in your ability to correct, but in your capacity for curiosity. When you enter a room, the question isn't whether you can direct the work, but whether the people in that room feel seen or merely managed.

In Practice

To move from Performance to Presence, we must audit our movements daily:

  • Listen fully before providing a single direction.
  • Start with curiosity, not correction.
  • The Eye Contact Audit: Were you mentally present in the conversation, or were you already at the next meeting?

The fire refines. The house endures.
